What is your latest release and what genre is it? My latest, and coincidentally, my first release is Like a Child to Home. While it has no specific genre, I consider that it is essentially literary fiction.

Quick description: Like a Child to Home tells the story of Wally Rose, a brooding, sporadically up-beat, old-time social worker and Carla Prentice, an overwhelmed single mother of two teenagers. The secretive Prentice family can barely keep a lid on their out-of-control lives.

Wally is juggling a convoluted caseload of youth and a baffling child welfare system. Unexpectedly, an old file comes back to bedevil him.

Wally has always had little patience for red tape. He is also running out of gas. Can he survive long enough to draw his career to a close on his own terms?

Brief biography:
I was active in the British Columbia child welfare arena for more than 25 years, most of them as a front-line, journeyman, government protection social worker and a dedicated union activist.

I wrote Like a Child to Home principally to depict, in fictional form, aspects of the demanding child welfare world I encountered. Like a Child to Home is also very much meant to be a means of paying tribute to the amazingly resilient young people that I met along the way as well as to the hard working adults who shared my journey.

I live, write and volunteer on Denman Island.

What are you working on now?
I have a number of projects on the go at the moment. I have almost completed the first draft of a detective novel, Bloodhound Days, but have carelessly set that aside for the moment to focus on a prequel to Like a Child to Home, tentatively titled Drawn Towards the Sun.

Bill’s reading recommendation:
I have been thoroughly enjoying a set of Swedish police procedurals written decades ago by the husband/wife team of Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo.
