Brief biography:
Robert Eggleton has served as a children’s advocate in an impoverished state for over forty years. He is best known for his investigative reports about children’s programs, most of which were published by the West Virginia Supreme Court where he worked from 1982 through 1997, and which also included publication of models of serving disadvantaged and homeless children in the community instead of in large institutions, research into foster care drift involving children bouncing from one home to the next — never finding a permanent loving family, and statistical reports on the occurrence and correlates of child abuse and delinquency.

Today, he is a recently retired children’s psychotherapist from the mental health center in Charleston, West Virginia, where he specialized in helping victims cope with and overcome physical and sexual abuse, and other mental health concerns. Rarity from the Hollow is his debut novel. Its release followed publication of three short Lacy Dawn Adventures in magazines: Wingspan Quarterly, Beyond Centauri, and Atomjack Science Fiction. The second edition of Rarity from the Hollow was released on November 3, 2016. Author proceeds have been donated to a child abuse prevention program operated by Children’s Home Society of West Virginia. Robert continues to write fiction with new adventures based on a protagonist that is a composite character of children he met when delivering group therapy services. The overall theme of his stories remains victimization to empowerment.

What are you working on now?
The next full-length Lacy Dawn Adventure is Ivy, also within the speculative fiction genre. How far will a child go to save a parent from addiction? Stopping an alien invasion was merely a rest area on the side road of this almost forgotten town.

Robert’s reading recommendation:
For anybody experiencing serious medical concerns, or as a gift to a loved one who is, I recommend The Warrior Patient by Temple Williams. It’s an amazing book about the importance of assertiveness in our health care delivery system.

Michael Fay – update on a new short story

Michael Fay has been previously featured on Reading Recommendations in Nov. 2013, and was actually the third author to be promoted on this site.

Passion
by J. Michael Fay
ePublished by IslandShorts

1963 is a pivotal year for Dan James. Believing his destiny was set at the age of eleven when he stood next to his father’s coffin, he enters the seminary at seventeen to become a priest. A well-read fellow seminarian and the world-shaking event later that year cause Dan to question his true passion in life.

Passion is the third in Michael Fay’s series of long-form short stories featuring Dan James, following The Whirlabout and The Healer. Along with Tenderness, all have been published by IslandShorts.

“This is a thoroughly engaging story about a young man’s coming of age and discovering while enrolled in a seminary that his calling is not for the priesthood but for literature and writing. One can smell the incense in the chapel and hear footsteps echoing in the stone hallways while young Dan James wrestles with his decision before walking out into a world with much to relish, treasure and describe.”

Peter Learn

I met Peter Learn in Canmore, AB, back in March 2012 when we were both invited to be part of En Vino Novellus, an annual author promotion that pairs books with a wine selection. This ingenious celebration was organized by Jerry Auld, who has also previously been featured on Reading Recommendations. (And I was accompanied by another Canmore author and friend, Hazel Hutchins, who has also been featured on Reading Recommendations!)

What is your latest release and what genre is it? I have two releases. The first is Hammer Time. It is a noir detective/black humour/farce. It’s the love child of Mickey Spillane and Stephen Leacock. The second is What Has Changed. Literary fiction/dark humour. Follow-up to Surrender.

Hammertime cover2Quick description: Hammer Time: Its hero is a height-challenged small town dick named Jack Hammer. His beloved Canmore is being torn apart. Is the problem the goddamned bunnies or is it the usual culprit – property developers? Hammer cobbles together a crew including his long-suffering assistant – Moira Pepperleigh, the brilliant Toronto heiress twins with an axe to grind – Bitsy and Stiffy, the town drunk – Timmy, Belle the hound, and the Dependables – a crime fighting crew of senior citizens. The story follows Hammer and his crew as they wander through small-town life tracking down the real villains.

What Has Changed jpegWhat Has Changed: Cam Dunker is back, reborn after his adventures in the circles of Hell. He’s somewhat changed. His wife is spending the summer as a performance artist in Paris. His grade 2 class is doing nothing but making little clay men, while his new kindergarten teacher, Joe the plumber, has begun a work-experience program for the little girls. In the background, the Rapture looms and, as Cam discovers, there is more to it than what Fran explained to him after they had been dating for a year.

Brief biography:
I currently live in Victoria, B.C. with my wife, Paula. Bertie Wooster and Augustus Finknottle, two wire-haired dachshunds, are my erstwhile companions. I have one published print novella, Surrender, and a number of short stories and essays in literary journals. What Has Changed and Hammer Time are recent Kindle releases.

What is your latest release and what genre is it? Cally’s Way, an historical self-discovery novel.

Quick description: Set in Crete, Cally’s Way interweaves the 2002 story of Cally, a 25-year old business graduate, with the World War II story of Callisto, her grandmother, who was a runner in the Cretan Resistance.

Cally’s mother was born on Crete but has always refused to talk about it. Now she has died, leaving one instruction: that before she starts her first job, Cally should visit her mother’s homeland. On Crete’s south coast she meets Oliver, a reticent, very attractive U.S. Army deserter, and a night of love awakens feelings Cally has never known. Then, waiting for her plane in Athens airport, she learns from a television report that the company she is about to work for is killing people with water pollution. These two events demolish Cally’s fragile equilibrium, setting her on a new, uncharted path, back in Crete, that strips her of ambition, illusions, of even her clothes before leading to deep love, a horrific family discovery, and a future she never would have imagined.

Brief biography:
Jane Bow grew up in Canada, the United States, Spain, England, Czechoslovakia and Cuba. The daughter of Canadian diplomats, she cut her educational teeth at the Lycee Francais de Madrid and England’s Roedean School, both dark, Dickensian institutions. Spending formative years in Spain and behind the Iron Curtain at the height of the Cold War has given Jane the sensibilities found in her fiction. Canadian university degrees in history, literature and journalism, and a lifetime of exploring human nature and the world’s cultures have added perspectives Jane uses, along with her love of the English language, to weave her stories. Her first novel, Dead And Living, was shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award, and selected for a Carleton University course in 2002. The Oak Island Affair, her second novel and a 2008 Next Generation Indie Book Award finalist, has just been re-published by Iguana Books. Jane has also published short fiction and non-fiction. She lives on the edge of a forest in Peterborough, Ontario, and spends time each year in Crete, where Cally’s Way is set.

What is your latest release and what genre is it? This Plague of Days, Season 3. I’ll also be releasing This Plague of Days, The Complete Series at the same time as Season 3 comes out. It’s horror, though I call everything I do suspense. I’m into twisty fiction.

Quick description: Season 3 is the finale to my apocalypse with an autistic hero. A plague virus unleashed by bio-terrorists transforms survivors into cannibals and it’s up to a very unlikely hero to stop it. The next book is a thriller set in New York. A young man who idolizes John Leguizamo wants to be a movie star. Suicidal friends, a missing mom and a murderer with a hammer get in the way. Should be out in the fall of 2014. After that, I’m writing the third crime novel in the Hit Man Series. Lots to do.

Robert’s reading recommendation:
Blake Crouch. After I read Run, I really wanted to write a crime novel with similar pacing. That was the guiding principal to the foundation novel of the Hit Man Series, Bigger Than Jesus.
