by Marja McGraw

Book 5 in mystery series

What could purple cows and elderly spies possibly have to do with each other?

When young Mikey Cross discovers ceramic purple cows, a ring, and investigative notes left by a mystery writer popular in the 1950s, his parents’ and grandparents’ lives are turned upside down.

Pamela and Chris Cross become involved in vintage intrigue with trepidation and more than a little angst when they find out there’s an elderly assassin on the prowl and the situation isn’t quite as vintage as they thought.

The dead just may come back as the living when it’s least expected.”

What is your latest release and what genre is it? I write two series, and the latest release is part of the Sandi Webster Mysteries, titled What Are the Odds? The genre is soft-boiled female P.I. with a little cozy mystery mixed in. All of the books are lighter reading with some humor.

Quick description: What are the odds of buying a house with a history to turn into a bed and breakfast, and discovering it’s the house that just keeps giving – and giving, and giving?

Sandi Webster and her partner, Peter Goldberg, forego a honeymoon to help her parents renovate just such a house only to discover there’s more to the home’s history than meets the eye. Stanley Hawks and his new wife, Felicity, are along for the ride and he has to face some of his worst fears.

This is an adventure these friends will long remember.

Brief biography:
Marja McGraw has past experience in both criminal and civil law enforcement, and she occasionally calls on this experience when writing her mysteries. She’s lived in California, Nevada, Oregon, Alaska and Arizona. She writes two series: the Sandi Webster Mysteries (female P.I.), and the Bogey Man Mysteries (amateur P.I. husband and wife team), both of which take place in Los Angeles. With her love of dogs, she’s included two yellow Labrador retrievers and a half Golden retriever/half wolf in her stories.

Her hobby is photography, and she says that writing as a job is the most fun she’s ever had. She and her husband now live in Arizona, where life is good.

What is your latest release and what genre is it? Deadly Ties (A Waterside Kennels Mystery) Genre: mystery/suspense

Quick description: A cozy mystery with an edge, Deadly Ties is a tale of family, friendship, and betrayal in a mountain community where ties run deep and grudges can linger for a lifetime.

Come to a place haunted by legends … where the search for treasure just might lead to murder.

Come to the hills of the Ozarks and meet Maggie Porter and her dogs—a champion Labrador Retriever, an aging Cocker Spaniel, and a Beagle retired from federal service. Maggie’s returned home to reopen the family dog kennel business, where she’s plagued by problems from the start. Serious trouble arises when a gossip-loving employee turns up dead holding an heirloom locket belonging to Maggie’s mother.

When Maggie starts asking questions she finds herself the target of anonymous threats and mysterious break-ins. When a security crisis puts everything she loves at risk, she realizes somebody doesn’t want Waterside Kennels back in business.

As the region sizzles in record heat and drought, a “Treasures of the Ozarks” advertising campaign disrupts her quest for answers even as it breathes new life into old tales and brings out tourists and treasure hunters alike. With her loyal dogs at her side, Maggie must dig for the truth. Along the way she learns everyone has something to hide.

And some secrets are worth killing for.

Brief biography:
Susan Holmes fell under the spell of books during her first visit to the public library, and she’s been enthralled ever since. By the fifth grade she’d progressed to reading Shakespeare, an experience that came in handy when stationed in England early in her military career. Years of writing military publications proved great training when she moved into academic publishing and then fiction. Today, she lives in northwest Arkansas where she works as a writer, editor, and college professor. She is a member of Sisters in Crime and the Dog Writers Association of America.

Her third book, Deadly Ties, is the first in the Waterside Kennels mystery series. Ozark folklore and traditions are recurring themes in the series, which is set against the backdrop of the Eureka Springs area. In pursuit of authentic material, she joined Search and Rescue exercises, ventured deep into caves, and followed the trail of Ozark legends. She works closely with dog trainers, kennel owners, and veterinarians to create an environment that dog lovers are sure to recognize and appreciate.

Here’s a peek at book #2 in the series, which picks up shortly after Deadly Ties ends: After the trouble she had over the summer, all Maggie wants is a quiet life. Alas, that’s not to be. First, an abrasive community member launches a campaign to enact a “dangerous dog” ordinance which could force Maggie out of business—or into jail. When he’s found dead near the kennel, some have their own reasons for wanting to pin the murder on Maggie herself. Under a cloud of suspicion and with her home and business at risk, she sets out to clear her name and finds herself caught in a murderous land feud that could tear the mountain community apart.

Susan’s reading recommendation:
Anything by Alyssa Maxwell, Ritter Ames, Marja McGraw, or Deborah Garner—enjoyable cozy mystery writers!
