Ken Rivard

I first met Ken Rivard when I was working at Books n Books in Calgary during the early 80s and he was a newly published poet launching his collection, Kiss Me Down to Size. Here we are, 10 published books, 30 years later, and I am pleased to be promoting Ken’s first novel, Motherwild on Reading Recommendations.

What is your latest release and what genre is it? Motherwild (published by Thistledown Press) – literary novel

Quick description: : Motherwild is an unvarnished journey of the struggle to survive on a violent and dangerous yet loving Montreal working-class street. Mostly set over the course of a year beginning in December, 1959, Joey Cantell faces the personal confusion of growing up while attempting to navigate a difficult relationship with his quick-witted, strong-willed alcoholic ma and a burgeoning attraction to Celine Lesage, the girl living downstairs in the apartment block who bears a puzzling likeness to his mother and who holds Joey enthralled with her own wild ways.

Quote from back cover of Motherwild: “In his 10th book, Ken Rivard shows himself to be a real pro at capturing the realities of working-class humanity. Motherwild is a work of beauty, a coming-of-age story and the eventual healing of a mother-son relationship. Rivard’s writing is honest, refreshing, startling, imaginative and gets the reader emotionally involved. Motherwild is a really good read!” ~ W.P. Kinsella

Ken Rivard and Lori Hahnel will be launching both their new novels on Thurs. Oct. 30, 7 p.m., in Calgary at Shelf Life Books. (Lori was previously featured on Reading Recommendations on Oct. 2, 2014.)
