Eileen Bell – update on the third book in a series

Eileen Bell has been featured previously several times on Reading Recommendations, first in Jan. 2014 as part of The Apocalyptic Four, then with news about the first two books in her Marie Jenner Mystery series, here and here. She’s back now to tell us about the third book in this series, just being released.

Stalking the Dead
by E.C. Bell
Published by Tyche Books
Genre: Paranormal Mystery, 3rd in a series

Marie Jenner is going home.

When Marie’s slightly-more-than-boss, James Lavall, decides it is vital that he speak to her mother, face to face, about Marie and all her secrets, she follows him to Fort McMurray.

What Marie doesn’t realize is that her stalkery ex-boyfriend, Arnie Stillwell, has gone home, too. And he’s managed to get himself killed just about the time James rolled into town, making James “a person of interest” in the Stillwell murder investigation.

Marie’s going to have to figure out who really killed Arnie to get James off. She’s also going to have to figure out a safe way to move Arnie’s spirit on to the next plane of existence, because the last thing she needs is for him to go all stalkery on her now that he’s dead.

Murder can really put a kink in a Jenner family reunion.

Stalking the Dead is an entertaining mash up of a thrilling PI novel with a creepy ghost story set in the rough oil town of Fort McMurray. Genre-bending doesn’t get any better than this.”

Eileen Bell – an update on the second book in a series

Eileen Bell has been previously featured on Reading Recommendations two times, once as part of The Apocalyptic Four and again as E.C. Bell with an update on the first novel in the Marie Jenner Mystery Series. Here she is now to tell us about the next book in the series.

DrowningInAmber_front

Drowning in Amber
by E.C. Bell

The second in the Marie Jenner Paranormal Mystery Series.

Marie Jenner is at it again!

In this fast-paced paranormal mystery, the second in the Marie Jenner Mystery Series, amateur sleuth Marie Jenner tries–one more time with feeling–to pull her life together. She takes on the case of Honoria Lowe, a woman of interest in Eddie Hansen’s gruesome murder by crucifixion.

Since Marie knows where Eddie Hansen’s spirit is, she figures it will be a slam dunk. All she has to do is ask him who nailed him to the tree, and she’d have one in the win column for her more or less boss, James Laval. But, she can’t find Eddie. He should have been right by the crucifixion tree where he was killed, but he wasn’t. Of course.

Why is there never a ghost around when you want one?

What are you working on now?
I am still in the process of updating my rebranded blog to offer more services to authors.

As for my own work, I have started on Miedo 3: Fragmented Fear which will cover my nineteen years in America up to my return to England and will conclude the Miedo Trilogy. I’m also working on a couple of songs I’ve written while redecorating the house.

Kevin’s reading recommendation:
I am currently reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I’m just past the half-way mark and have to say, it’s bloody brilliant! I’m also reading, Never Turn Back by Lorna Lee, which I find fascinating to say the least and I’m only about a third of the way through it. I like to have at least one hardcopy and one e-book on the go at the same time and of completely different genres. I sometimes have several books open.

Sue Perry

At home, Nica tackles missing person cases, while in the larger reality of the Frames she is swept into an escalating battle with stakes that could not be higher.

Brief biography:
Sue Perry is a seasoned yet new writer who published one novel then went off and did other things. She enjoyed (then stopped enjoying) a variety of careers, from television producer to college professor to disaster scientist, and recently resumed writing novels. She now has four, as varied as her interests. Sue’s books span many genres and perspectives but share key features. They all have smartass dialog, strong female characters, and stories that unfold like mysteries. There will always be a cat, and there will usually be a musician. Although she loves writing – and is proud to be a writer – if Sue could be anything, she would be a musician. She missed her chance at the dawn of punk, when musical ability was optional.

Eileen Bell – update on a new novel

Eileen Bell was previously featured on Reading Recommendations as a member of The Apocalyptic Four in January, 2014.

AUthor photo - close - colour 2013 Eileen Bell (I’m writing as E.C.Bell, this time)

What is your latest release and what genre is it? My latest release, and my first “on my own” novel, is Seeing the Light, a Marie Jenner Mystery. It is — surprise surprise — a mystery. Paranormal mystery to be a bit more exact. With dollops of romance and humour, just to spice it up.

Quick description: Marie Jenner has never had much luck. Her job sucks. Her apartment — the one with the unbreakable lease — has a ghost. And worst of all, her mother won’t let up about her joining the “family business.” Since that business is moving the spirits of the dead on to the next plane of existence and doesn’t pay at all, Marie’s not interested. She wants a normal job — a normal life. That’s not too much to ask, is it?

Apparently, it is. Even when she applies for the job of her dreams, Marie doesn’t get what she wants. Well, not entirely. She does get the job — but she also gets another ghost. Farley Hewitt, the newly dead caretaker of the building, wants her to prove his death is not an accident, and she’s pretty sure he’s going to haunt her until she does.

All Marie wants is normal. She isn’t going to get it.

Eileen Bell has written most of her life (usually as an antidote to whatever day job she had) and has had short fiction published in magazines and several anthologies, including the double Aurora Award-winning Women of the Apocalypse.

Recently, she and three other writers had a collaborative novel, The Puzzle Box, published through EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing. Her own paranormal mystery, Seeing the Light, has recently been published through Tyche Books.

When she’s not writing or editing or thinking about writing, she’s living a fine life in her round house (even if it is in a perpetual state of renovation) with her husband and two dogs.

What are you working on now?
I am working on the second in the Marie Jenner Mystery Series (yay!) working title Trapped in Amber. I’m also working on a post apocalyptic story that started as a lark but is getting too good to put aside. (Yay for that, too.) And in the moments I have left, I’m organizing all my 10th Circle Project writing (an online writing experiment that left me with 70,000 words of a really interesting story) into a novel of some sort.

Eileen’s reading recommendation:
I am reading On Spec’s 25th anniversary anthology, Casserole Diplomacy and Other Stories right now, and am enjoying it very much.

What is your latest release and what genre is it? Middlehill Book 1: Changeling. It’s a paranormal gay romance.

Quick description: Changeling started out as an Id Fic* that was going to about a prostitute with a heart of gold doing whatever he could to protect his brother from the life he was forced to live, but it evolved into something so much more. The book might be about a young person who is starting out on his very first real relationship after being hurt and betrayed and broken to the point where he didn’t think that he would dare inflict his damaged life on a normal person, but it evolved into a story about a young man who never stopped trying to fight against impossible odds just so that he could keep his brother with him. The idea that he could be capable of loving another, and having that other love him was beyond impossible. So when he finds a man who seems absolutely perfect on the outside and on the inside, for once he could see himself as actually being happy. But in this world, there is magic in sacrifice, so when he has to give up his lover for his brother, anything is possible.

*”The premise is a celebration of those fics you should be ashamed of enjoying and you know they’re kinda bad but you can’t help it, you love them anyways: id!fic.” From Actually A Little Bit Poignant

Brief biography:
Barbara was born and raised in northern Alberta. She began slashing her characters before she even knew what slash was. She started writing as Angela Fiddler with her Master of the Lines series, which was for a darling friend who requested a birthday present involving hot, gay, kinky vampires, and is now dabbling in a connected universe. The Tempest series, starting with Coral Were his Bones, exists in the same universe as Changeling.

When she’s not following the exploits of selkies, sex demons and vampires, she writes epic fantasy and makes the occasional foray into science fiction and short stories.

What are you working on now?
Last year was a crazy year for me. I wrote eight books over the course of it, and all but one of them is contracted out. I’d love to be working on something new, but just like picking the house seems like the most difficult part to buying your first house for all the paperwork that’s involved, typing “The End” on a manuscript is the easiest part of publishing. I just finished a rewrite on the sequel to Coral Were His Bones, my selkie story set in BC (Though it would be easier to just say Victorian Selkies, there’s nothing steampunk about them) Coral came out in May. I’m in the opening quarter of the rewrite of Book Two in the Middlehill series. I’d really like to work on something new this year. That’s my goal – to have a new story started.

Barbara’s reading recommendation:
Megan Whalen Turner’s The Thief series is absolutely the most delightful, if at times quite brutal, series I’ve read in a very long time. I also have loved everything that Marian Keyes has put out under her own name.

Maria Savva – update on a new book

Previously, Maria Savva was featured on Reading Recommendations. Since that time, she has published a new book that she would like to tell you about in this update. Here’s Maria!

Far Away In Time

The new book is Far Away In Time – a collection of 8 short stories

A quick description: A mixed-genre collection of stories, including mystery/paranormal, fantasy, and dark fiction. When I came up with the title, Far Away In Time, it reminded me of the song, Echo Beach, by Martha and the Muffins. As that’s one of my favourite songs, when I realised that the title was also a line from the song, I decided to tweak a few of the stories so that there are links to that song. Music geeks might notice them. One thing, for example, is that there is a character whose job is an ‘office clerk’ 🙂

Updated bio:
Maria Savva lives and works in London. She studied Law at Middlesex University and The College of Law. She is a lawyer, although not currently practicing law. She writes novels and short stories in different genres, including drama, psychological thriller, and family saga. Many of her books and stories are inspired by her years working as a lawyer, although she has not written a courtroom drama to date. She has published five novels, the most recent of which is Haunted, a crime fiction/psychological thriller. Far Away In Time is her sixth collection of short stories. You can find out more about her work and where to purchase at her official website.
